FALL 2017 - Dear Friends of Birthright,
Dear Friends of Birthright, In our Spring/Summer newsletter we expressed concerns about a Federal judge’s ruling which blocked portions of Missouri law that required abortion facilities to meet certain health and safety requirements. Now this same court has issued orders requiring Missouri to issue licenses to more abortion clinics in the state. Planned Parenthood has subsequently reopened their Kansas City and Columbia abortion facilities. They will perform surgical and chemical abortions. Not every woman who comes to Birthright is considering an abortion. A woman may be content with the prospect of having a baby, but her personal situation—lack of funds, housing, and family support may weigh heavily in her decision to continue her pregnancy. She is not “abortion minded” but she still may be “abortion vulnerable”. In the process of addressing her challenges she may feel overwhelmed and resort to thinking of abortion as her only option. The easy availability of local abortion clinics makes this choice for life even more at risk. This is why one of the most important services we provide is our commitment to following up with our moms. A woman may leave Birthright content with her positive pregnancy test but her contentment may evaporate when she shares her news and gets negative reactions and pressure to abort. With her permission we keep in touch with her throughout her pregnancy to ensure she knows that she has someone in her corner. Someone who is willing to help her stand firm in her choice for life. As always, we ask you to pray for our moms and our volunteers. They all need wisdom and the strength of the Holy Spirit to guide them.
Sincerely yours for Life - Jean Wankum, Director
